To display or hide formatting marks (e.g., spaces, tabs, and paragraphbreaks) in a Microsoft Word document:
Have you ever opened up a Word document to find it full of paragraph marks and other symbols? If you’re editing the doc or troubleshooting a formatting issue, you may find this view especially useful. Microsoft Word, arguably the best word processor out there for the Windows Operating System, is extremely feature-rich. One of Word’s many, many features is the ability for users to have Word display an array of different, usually invisible marks and symbols that are used to format the text in a document. Dec 24, 2012 I have a 2008 MS Word for Mac and for some reason I do not understand, suddenly I have those weird paragraph marks appearing on every line. In previous versions of Word, I think there was somewhere in the visible tool bar an image of that actual 'backwards P' paragraph symbol that one could uncheck to hide. I have nothing like that on this version.

Show Hide Paragraph Marks
- In the message window, on the Format Text tab, in the Paragraph group, click the button that looks like a paragraph mark. (When you point your mouse at the button, the tooltip says Show/Hide ¶ ). Keyboard shortcut CTRL+SHIFT+.
- To view paragraph marks in Word, click on the Home tab in the ribbon and then click on the paragraph mark in the Paragraph section. As an example, here I have some text in Word with basic formatting: Now if I click on the button above, I’ll instantly see all the formatting marks in the document.
- Oh, a wonderful default feature of MS Word. You’ll need to highlight what you’ve written and then click Format, then Paragraph. A new screen will pop up and you’ll need to look for a clickable box that says “Don’t add space between paragraphs of the same style.”.

- In Word 2010, on the File tab, click Options. InWord 2007, from the Office Button menu, select WordOptions near the bottom right corner of the menu.
- Select Display from the listing at the left.
- In the section titled 'Always show these formatting marks on thescreen', check or uncheck the appropriate boxes to view the marks ofyour choice. To show or hide them all, select Show all formatting marks.
- To save your changes, click OK.

- From the Word menu, select Preferences...
- Select View.
- In the section titled 'Nonprinting characters', check or uncheckthe appropriate boxes to view the marks of your choice. CheckAll to see all formatting marks.
- To save your changes, click OK.
